Futon Massage in Eau Claire, WI
Eau Claire's Only Floor-Mat Massage · Clothes On · 60, 90 or 120 Minutes
Futon massage is table massage turned on its head: instead of lying face-down under a sheet while a therapist works from one side, you stay dressed on a padded mat on the floor while a certified therapist moves around and over you, using body weight, forearms, knees and assisted stretches. A 60 minute or 90 minute session covers ground a table physically cannot.
Q Healthy Spa is the only place in Eau Claire that offers it. This page covers what the session is, who it suits, what to wear, how it compares to the table work you already know, and how to book. If you would rather compare every style first, the Eau Claire massage guide lays them out side by side.
What You Should Know
The Only One in Eau Claire
No other studio in the city offers floor-mat massage. The nearest comparable session is well outside the Chippewa Valley, which is why this is our signature service.
You Stay Dressed
No draping, no oil, no undressing. Wear something loose and stretchy — leggings and a t-shirt are ideal. This alone makes it the easiest first massage for people who find table massage awkward.
Stretching a Table Can't Reach
On the floor your therapist has 360 degrees of access and can use their own body weight for leverage. Hip openers, spinal twists and shoulder work simply are not possible on a 28-inch-wide table.
Pressure Comes From Body Weight
Forearms, elbows, knees and shins rather than thumbs. It goes deeper with less strain on the therapist, which is why the pressure stays consistent through a 90 minute session.
Hot Stone + Sauna Included
Complimentary with every session at no extra charge. Most guests spend 15 to 20 minutes in the sauna afterward.
Certified, Experienced Therapists
Every session is run by a certified therapist who trained in this specific style. Wisconsin licenses massage therapists through the Department of Safety and Professional Services.

What actually happens in a futon session
You arrive in loose clothing, we talk for about 5 minutes about where you are tight and what you want from the hour, and then you lie down on a padded mat on the floor. There is no sheet to arrange and nothing to take off.
From there your therapist works in a sequence: compression along the legs and back to warm the tissue, then assisted stretches, then targeted pressure on whatever has not released. You get moved through 4 to 6 positions over the session — supine, prone, side-lying and sometimes seated — because each one opens access to a different set of muscles.

The pressure is body weight, not thumbs
On a table a therapist mostly pushes downward with hands and forearms. On the floor they can kneel beside you, brace, and lean — using their own mass rather than arm strength. That means deeper, steadier pressure that does not fade in the last 20 minutes of a 90 minute session.
It also means the contact surface is broader. Forearms and shins spread the load over more area than a thumb does, so the same depth feels less pointed. People who find deep tissue too sharp often prefer this.
The stretches are the part people remember
Expect somewhere between 15 and 25 assisted stretches across a session — hip openers, hamstring lengthening, spinal twists, shoulder and chest opening. Your therapist does the work; your job is to stay relaxed and breathe out as the stretch deepens.
This is where most guests notice the difference from table massage. A lot of people describe it as assisted yoga where someone else does all the effort, which is close enough to be a useful way to picture it.
Futon vs table massage — which to book
Neither is better; they solve different problems. Table massage is unmatched for detailed work on one area with oil and glide. Futon massage is unmatched for range of motion, hips and full-body movement. The table below is the honest comparison.
| Futon | Swedish | Deep tissue | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Floor mat | Table | Table |
| Clothing | Stay dressed | Undress to comfort | Undress to comfort |
| Oil | None | Yes | Yes |
| Assisted stretching | 15 to 25 per session | Minimal | Some |
| Pressure source | Body weight, forearms, knees | Hands, gliding | Forearms, elbows |
| Best for | Hips, mobility, full body | Relaxation, circulation | Knots, chronic tightness |
| Typical booking | 90 minutes | 60 minutes | 60 or 90 minutes |
| Add cupping or gua sha | Yes | Yes | Yes |
What to wear, and what to expect afterward
Wear leggings, joggers or athletic shorts with a t-shirt. Avoid jeans, belts, zippers and anything you cannot fold into a deep stretch. Bring socks if you like — some of the foot and leg work is more comfortable with them on.
Afterward, expect to feel loose rather than sleepy. Because there is no oil and no undressing, most guests go straight back into their day. Drink some extra water, and if the session went deep, keep the next 24 hours light on hard training. That is comfort guidance, not medicine.

How often is worth it
For general mobility, every 2 to 4 weeks is a reasonable rhythm. If you are working on a specific restriction — a hip that has been tight since a running injury healed, say — weekly for 3 or 4 sessions then spacing out tends to hold better than one heroic booking.
One honest note: NCCIH's overview of massage therapy is careful about which claims the evidence supports. Massage is well established for relaxation and easing ordinary muscle tension. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed condition, and it should not delay real care.
Booking futon massage in Eau Claire
Call 715-256-8288. We are at 2151 Eastridge Center, Floor 1, #C, open 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM all 7 days, with free parking directly outside. First visits are $5 off, and hot stone therapy plus sauna access are included with every session.
Book 90 minutes if you can. Futon work moves through more positions than table massage, and 60 minutes covers the sequence but leaves less time on the areas you actually came in for. If you are coming from out of town, Chippewa Falls is about 15 minutes away.
How to Book a Massage at Q Healthy Spa
Booking takes about 2 minutes and there is no online form to fill in. Call 715-256-8288 any day between 9:00 AM and 9:30 PM, say which service and length you want, and the session is held under your first name. Walk-ins are taken when a table is free, which on weekday afternoons is most of the time.
- Call 715-256-8288. Someone answers the phone during all 12.5 open hours, 7 days a week — there is no booking app and no deposit.
- Pick a length: 60 minutes for a full body session, 90 minutes for unhurried work on the back and shoulders, or 120 minutes when you want both.
- Pick a pressure: light, medium, or firm. You can change it mid-session at any point, and saying so does not offend anyone.
- Mention add-ons at booking. Cupping and gua sha are added to a 60 or 90 minute session and need a few extra minutes set aside.
- Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early at 2151 Eastridge Center, Floor 1, Suite C. Parking is free and the entrance is on the ground floor.
- Tell the therapist what hurts and what to avoid before the session starts. This 60-second conversation is what makes the other 59 minutes useful.
- Pay by cash or card at the end. First-time visitors get $5 off, and no appointment is needed to claim it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is futon massage?
Futon massage is bodywork performed on a padded mat on the floor rather than a table, with you fully dressed and no oil. The therapist uses body weight through forearms, elbows, knees and shins, and works in 15 to 25 assisted stretches across the session. It draws on traditional Asian floor-based bodywork and gives the therapist 360 degrees of access, which a 28-inch table cannot.
Do I have to undress for futon massage?
No. You stay fully dressed for the whole session — no draping, no oil. Wear something loose and stretchy such as leggings or joggers with a t-shirt, and skip jeans, belts and zippers. Many guests pick futon massage as their first massage for exactly this reason.
How long should I book?
90 minutes is the most-booked length and the one we recommend. A futon session moves you through 4 to 6 positions, so 60 minutes covers the sequence but leaves less time on the areas you came in for. 120 minutes is available if you want unhurried work on more than two regions.
Is futon massage painful?
It should not be. Pressure comes from broad surfaces — forearms, shins — spread over more area than a thumb, so the same depth feels less pointed than deep tissue. Stretches are taken to your comfortable end range, not past it. Tell your therapist at any point and they will ease off.
Is futon massage good for tight hips or a stiff back?
It is the style we most often recommend for both. Floor work allows hip openers and spinal twists that are not possible on a table, and the assisted stretching is the core of the session rather than an afterthought. For pain that has lasted months rather than weeks, see a medical provider first and treat massage as support alongside that care.
Where else in Eau Claire can I get floor-mat massage?
Nowhere. Q Healthy Spa is the only studio in Eau Claire offering futon-style floor massage, which is why it is our signature service. Our Eau Claire massage guide covers what the other studios in town specialise in.
Can I add cupping or gua sha to a futon session?
Yes. Cupping works well inside a futon session because the floor work warms the tissue through stretching and compression before the cups go on. Gua sha covers the neck and shoulder ridge where a cup will not seal. Mention it when you book at 715-256-8288.
How much does futon massage cost?
Pricing depends on session length and any current specials, so call 715-256-8288 for an exact quote. First visits are $5 off, and every session includes complimentary hot stone therapy and sauna access at no extra charge.
